OUR STORY

60 years of history

Sue’s bites and delights was created by a grandson of Aki’s Bakery to pay homage to his Bachan (grandma, in Japanese) Suyeko.

Sue, along with her husband Aki, started from humble beginnings as owners of a coffee shop, before starting what would become Aki’s Bakery in San Jose Japantown 60 years ago. They had little knowledge about running a business or baking. It was only through hard work and determination that Aki’s Bakery became a staple in the community for all types of gatherings, from birthdays to weddings.

They successfully ran the bakery for over 40 years and eventually sold the business at the time of retirement.

Aki’s Bakery was known for their quality ingredients, perfectly baked goods, and excellent service. Sue’s Bites and Delights hopes to recapture some of the magic of Aki’s Bakery by bringing back popular flavors and offering new twists to please your palate.

About us

We are a family-run small business based out of Fresno, CA.

It all started when Darryl was a young child. He spent many hours at his grandparent’s bakery (Aki’s Bakery) watching his family work while eating chocolate shavings and custard.

Though he enjoyed the baked goods, he never imagined himself baking or running a bakery. He ended up pursuing teaching where he taught for almost a decade in Southern California before relocating to the Central Valley, his wife’s hometown.

Darryl and his family welcomed their first child and after many sleepless nights, he realized he wanted to pursue something besides teaching. He discovered a passion for baking and set on a journey to continue his family’s tradition of making desserts… but with a twist.
